Cube Frames

Spin a 3D cube, fade it down to its frame, and count the small cubes for each size.

By Shannon Mellon · Last updated 3 November 2026

How to use it

  1. Choose a cube size with − and +.
  2. Slide to Frame and spin the cube to count the cubes that are left.
  3. Type your count and check it.
  4. Add the next cube, look for the pattern, and predict before you build.

Students spin a 3D cube built from small cubes and fade away the hidden ones until only the frame is left. They count the cubes in the frame for each size, check each answer and build up a table of results. The pattern in the table leads to a general rule. Inspired by the NRICH task Holes.

Who it’s for

MYP years 1–3 (ages 11–14). The pattern work also suits MYP 4 as a lead-in to linear sequences.

Branch of mathematics: spatial reasoning. Topics: volume, surface area, 3d solids, patterns and sequences.
